What is NCLEX RN?
NCLEX-RN stands for National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurse. Entry into the practice of nursing in the United States and its territories is regulated by the licensing authorities within each jurisdiction. The NCLEX RN examination is different than a traditional “pencil-and-paper” examination. The NCLEX examination uses Computerized Adaptive Testing (CAT) to administer the items.
What are the components of NCLEX RN examination?
There are three sections to the NCLEX RN examination:
- A tutorial at the beginning which helps the candidates to understand the various types of question patterns which might appear for the exam.
- The exam which is a Computerized Adaptive Testing (CAT) with a minimum number of 75 and a maximum number of 265 questions and 6 hour time duration.
- A customer service survey that concludes the examination session.
After the tutorial, the examination is presented to the candidate. The candidate will continue to answer questions until a result is reached or the total time for the exam is exceeded (6 hours for the NCLEX-RN exam). The survey at the end of the examination is optional, but it is encouraged that candidates complete this for a feedback on their examination experience.
What is the passing standard in NCLEX RN exam?
The NCLEX examination is a multiple choice exam which uses an interactive system called Computerized Adaptive Testing (CAT) to gauge the candidate’s level of competence.
RN candidates will answer a minimum of 75 questions. Once the candidate has answered the minimum number of questions, the computer will attempt to access the level of competence. If the candidate is clearly above the passing standard at this time, he/she would pass; likewise, if the candidate is clearly below the standard he/she would fail. If the candidate is too close to the standard to allow a definitive result to be determined, he/she would continue to answer questions until a final assessment can be made. RN candidates may take a maximum of 265 questions.
The candidate will have 6 hours to complete the exam. This includes the time set aside for the introductory computer tutorial and for two 10-minute breaks.
Is it true that the candidates pass the exam if they get 75 Questions for NCLEX RN exam?
It’s a common myth. If a candidate gets the minimum number of questions that doesn’t mean they have passed the exam. It means that only 75 questions were required to determine whether candidate is above or below the passing standard.
Items are administered following the principles of computer adaptive testing (CAT). Candidates are NOT randomly selected to receive a designated number of examination items. As a candidate takes the examination, questions are selected based on the candidate's response to previous questions. Testing stops when it can be determined with 95% confidence that a candidate's performance is either above or below the passing standard, regardless of the number of items answered or the amount of testing time elapsed.
What happens when allotted 6 hour time is elapsed?
When time runs out, the computer reviews the candidate's answers to the last 60 questions and calculates competency to determine the pass or fail result. This does not mean you must answer the last 60 questions correctly to pass. It means you must achieve a competency level above the passing standard in order to be successful at passing.
How long will it take to get the test results?
Approximately one month after taking the examination, the candidate will receive written results by mail, but online results can be availed within three working days through Pearson Vue.
Where are the international testing centers that can administer NCLEX?
The countries and non-member board territory that currently administer the NCLEX Examinations are Australia, Canada, England, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Mexico, Philippines, Puerto Rico and Taiwan.
Will the NCLEX examination administered internationally be the same as the examinations administered domestically?
Yes. The test specifications and passing standards are the same for all NCLEX examinations. The international test centers are required to meet the same security and test administration requirements as domestic test centers.
Is each state’s licensure exam different from one another?
Each member board jurisdiction (state) uses the NCLEX examination. There is no difference across jurisdictions—the same passing standard applies to all candidates from all jurisdictions.
Where is the NCLEX RN examination administered?
The NCLEX examination is administered by Pearson VUE, at over 200 Pearson Professional Centers located in the U.S., and in 18 international locations. Pearson VUE has been NCSBN’s test vendor since October 2002.
